狮子原产于亚洲西部和非洲，汉代作为贡品传入中国。当时狮子类稀有动物都养在帝王宫苑内，平常百姓难以看到。狮子的传入动摇了传说中虎的威信，逐渐被人们视为辟邪瑞兽。加之佛教对狮子大为推崇，因此狮子也随着佛教扎根于民间。并被视作"百兽之王"，压邪安吉的象征。

以前建造的庙宇，一般将雄狮摆放在左边，雌狮摆放在右边，这主要是受到传统观念"左边为大位，右为小"和"男尊女卑"的影响，所以有"男左女右"之说。但新建的庙宇，则渐渐不受传统庙宇建筑观念影响，如果你看到的狮子不是在正门两侧，比如座落在广场前，则纯是装饰取象征意义而已。
