在佛教典籍中，有关狮子的说法很多
中国本土并没有狮子，历史上狮子曾广泛分布于非洲、欧洲东南部和亚洲，但亚洲东部不产狮子，而是集中在南亚和西亚。
There are no lions in China. Historically, lions were widely distributed in Africa, southeastern Europe and Asia. However, lions are not produced in eastern Asia, but concentrated in South Asia and West Asia.
根据《穆天子传》（晋·郭璞注）所记载周穆王驾八骏巡游西域一事，其中提到有“狻猊野马走五百里”。推断，周穆王在位离今3000年之前便有“狮子”的记载，称为“狻猊”。

两汉时期，狮子以“进贡”的方式传入中国。到了唐代时期，丝绸之路的黄金时代，西域狮子更多地入贡中国。
